Captiwate vs Koala

Koala is gone. Your visitor signals don’t have to be.

Koala was acquired by Cursor in July 2025 and shut down on September 30, 2025 — its site still lists the plans under a shutdown banner. Captiwate identifies visiting companies and people the way Koala did, then lets your team chat, call or video-call them while they’re still on the page, with AI chat after hours and unlimited seats.

Where Captiwate is different

A feed tells you. A conversation converts.

Koala was a signal feed for reps: identify the account, score it, post it to Slack, act on it later in the CRM or a sequencer. Captiwate does the identification and then lets your rep chat, call or video-call the visitor while they’re still on the page, with AI chat covering the hours nobody is online.

Built for the website visit, not the warehouse

Koala’s strength was PLG: product-usage events from Segment and your data warehouse, blended with web activity and 30+ enrichment sources. Captiwate concentrates on the website: it identifies the visiting company and, where lawful, the person on the page, shows your reps that context and opens the conversation. If product-usage signals are the core of your motion, Captiwate does not replace that part.

Unlimited seats, one number

Koala was priced on monthly credits with a few seats included — two on Free and Starter, three on Growth — and extra seats sold separately. Captiwate is priced on monthly visitors, from $15,000/year, with unlimited seats, conversations and identified companies on every plan. For a two-person team that only wanted alerts, Koala’s free plan was cheaper; Captiwate is priced for teams that will staff the conversation.

Feature comparison: Captiwate vs Koala

Koala was a signal platform for sales reps: it identified accounts and people, scored them on web and product activity and pushed them to Slack and the CRM. Captiwate starts from the same identification and adds the layer that talks to the visitor.

Last verified: 2026-09-04 against getkoala.com, getkoala.com/pricing and getkoala.com/security, which still carry the banner “Koala has been acquired by Cursor and will be shutting down on Sept 30”. The July 2025 acquisition is from TechCrunch and the September 30, 2025 shutdown from Koala’s CEO announcement and third-party coverage. Koala’s docs could not be loaded on the day; “not listed publicly” means we could not find it on their pages. Koala prices are as still listed on their pricing page and can no longer be bought.

Pricing: credits and seats vs. one number

Koala sold monthly plans metered by credits, with two or three seats included and more sold separately. Captiwate sells annual plans on a single number — your monthly visitors — with unlimited seats and nothing metered on top.

“One thing that should get any business excited about Captiwate is when there is a call coming from a visitor. A user is calling the website — that is pretty cool, and that is the dopamine hit.”

Frequently asked questions

Can I migrate from Koala to Captiwate?

Yes. Captiwate takes care of teams coming from Koala financially and during the move. Setup is a single JavaScript snippet; from there you connect HubSpot or Salesforce, point alerts at Slack or Teams and rebuild your Koala audiences as Captiwate traffic segments and automation flows — plus live chat, video and AI chat on top. Bring your old Koala setup to a 30-minute walkthrough and leave with a plan.

What happened to Koala?

Cursor (Anysphere) acquired Koala in a deal reported by TechCrunch on July 18, 2025, five months after Koala’s $15 million Series A. The deal was for the engineering team: Cursor did not plan to integrate Koala’s product. Koala’s CEO announced the platform would shut down by September 30, 2025 and pointed customers to Common Room for the closest feature coverage. On 2026-09-04 getkoala.com still carries the banner “Koala has been acquired by Cursor and will be shutting down on Sept 30” and still lists its plans, but the product can no longer be bought.

How did Koala pricing compare to Captiwate’s?

Different models. Koala was billed monthly on credits: a free plan with 2 seats and 100 credits, Starter at $200/month for 2 seats and 1,000 credits, Growth at $1,000/month for 3 seats and 5,000 credits, and a custom Business plan, with extra seats sold separately at a price not listed on the page (as still shown on getkoala.com/pricing, 2026-09-04). For a small team that only wanted alerts, Koala’s free plan or Starter was the cheaper tool. Captiwate is annual and priced on monthly visitors: Grow is $15,000/year up to 20,000 visitors, Scale is $30,000/year up to 100,000, Unlimited is custom — with unlimited seats, conversations and identified companies included.

Does Captiwate cover Koala’s product-usage signals?

No. Koala’s Growth and Business plans pulled product-usage events from Segment, CDPs and data warehouses and scored accounts on them next to web activity. Captiwate works from the website: it identifies the company and, where lawful, the person on the page, scores the visit and alerts your team in real time. If in-product usage is the signal your reps live on, keep a dedicated tool for that and use Captiwate for the visit itself.

Does Captiwate identify individual people like Koala did?

Yes. Captiwate identifies both the visiting company and the person where lawful, and shows your reps who they are talking to. Koala identified people through email identify calls from your site or product and its enrichment sources, then posted the result to Slack for follow-up. Captiwate’s difference is what happens next: your team can open a chat, a video call or a co-browsing session in the moment, and AI chat covers the rest of the day.

Is there a free trial?

No, a free trial is not available today. We offer a fully customized demo built around your website, so you can see how Captiwate would work on your live site before committing.

Do I need a developer to set up Captiwate?

No. Adding Captiwate is a single JavaScript snippet, similar to Google Analytics. Our team handles the full setup and most customers are live within minutes — no engineering resources required.
